16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is an international campaign originating from the first Women's Global Leadership Institute co-ordinated by the Centre for Women's Global Leadership in 1991. Participants chose the dates 25 November - International Day Against Violence Against Women - and 10 December - International Human Rights Day - in order to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasize that such violence is a violation of human rights. 

For the 13th year, South Africa is taking part in the global 16 Days of Activism Campaign. South Africa is still home to high levels of violence against its women and children, despite a world-renowned Constitution and a legislative overhaul that safeguards women's and children's rights.

The government, business, civil society organisations, faith-based organisations and the media are all participating in the drive to increase awareness of the negative impact of violence and abuse on women and children.

The 2012 16 Days Campaign will continue with the global theme: From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Let’s Challenge Militarism and End Violence Against Women! 

Lifetime Achievement Prize for Media Development in Africa

The Millennium Excellence Foundation (MEF) announced this week that it will bestow a Lifetime Africa Achievement Prize (LAAP) for Media Development in Africa to the Executive Chairman of MultiChoice South Africa Group Holdings, Nolo Letele. Nolo has steered the group through a number of important achievements, notably interactive television, the dual view decoder and the personal video recorder. The prize will be awarded to him during a ceremony to be held at the State House in Nairobi, Kenya on 15 December 2012.

The Lifetime Africa Achievement Prize is awarded to individuals who have selflessly devoted themselves to bring about change in the lives of Africans within the last decade. Change that impacts communities and that significantly enhances the lives of the people for a better future.

Other 2012 LAAP recipients are the late President of Ghana, Profession John Mills for Peace, Democratic Governance and Development; Mohammed El Baradei of Egypt for Scientific Research in Africa; Dr Mohammed Ibrahim from Sudan for Action for Africa and the President of Uganda, HE Yoweri Museveni for National Building and African Leadership.

Past recipients of the Lifetime Africa Achievement Prize include Desmond Tutu and Cyril Ramaphosa from South Africa; Dr Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations; James Wolfensohn, former President of the World Bank in the USA and Wole Soyinka (Nobel Laureate) for Literature.

The Memoto is a tiny upcoming camera and GPS that you clip on and wear. It’s an entirely new kind of digital camera with no controls. Instead, it automatically takes photos as you go. The Memoto app then seamlessly and effortlessly organises them for you. 

The camera contains 8 GB of flash memory, with 5 MP resolution and a battery lifetime of between one and two days. The camera is always on and takes two photos a minute, until you put the lens face down or place it in your pocket. 

Sweden-based Memoto launched a Kickstarter fundraising campaign in order to bring the product to market.

South Africa as host nation qualified automatically as a top seed in Group A, and is joined by minnows Cape Verde, Morocco and Angola. 

Coaches were satisfied with the Africa Cup of Nations draw with hosts South Africa seeing Morocco as their toughest opponents and Ivory Coast, Tunisia and Algeria in a 'group of death'.  "All the draws were tough and I think this is a fairly good draw for us," said South Africa coach Gordon Igesund. "It was touch and go because it was either going to be Nigeria or Angola,"  he said, relieved that of two remaining countries to be allocated, Angola fell in Group A with the hosts and Nigeria in Group C with Zambia.
